The Aerial Mend
"The aerial mend places a large curve of slack in the line - valuable for casting over or around obstacles or dealing with large changes in current.
To execute it, move the rod tip briskly to one side and back directly after the final forward cast stop. The sooner you make the side-and-back movement, the farther out the mend will be. Keep in mind that the farther the mend, the more power required during the initial sideways motion.
This is a great presentation cast because it can be very accurate in fly placement, slack placement, and amount of slack. Use this whenever you need slack in a particular place, as when casting over a current to slack water (mend upstream), or when casting across slow water to fast water (mend downstream).
If you want to get really clever try putting slack to both the right and left in AND indifferent places."
Advantages: Only the slack you need, and only where you need it.
Disadvantages: It can take time to get the timing down, difficult to place slack near the leader.
This tutorial, along with 9 other casts, the five essentials of fly casting and additional explanations are all included in one volume on our Casts that Catch Fish DVD. More Info...
