Big Trev's busy down in the workshop cooking up a sweet Epic Bandit for Cameron Mortenson over at the Fiberglass Manifesto
There are 15 unique and separate processes involved in building an Epic fly rod, from selecting and cleaning the blank right through to the final QC inspection, polish and dispatch.
Epic fiberglass fly rods are unique in that they are they are the only production rod in the world to be constructed using a fully unidirectional
S-2 Glass fibre material. Even today, most fiberglass fly rods are constructed using older E-Glass material - And of course that old school glass feeling is a very real part of the affection many anglers have for 'glass'
So here is the rod nearly finished. Wrapped with Pearsalls dark brown and dark olive to match a golden Hardy Sovereign (or any other classic "golden" reel like Fin Nor, Seamaster, etc.)
Hi, my name is Trevor Bourne from the UK,
Underground rod builder and avid fly fisherman.
This was one build I wish I never dreamt up!
(but glad I did)
Too many hours spent thinking about how to make it happen. Hair-loss from the worry. Long days in the shed making sawdust and long nights in the workshop putting it all together. Time well spent…
Great shots from Markus Haldin of You Name It in Finland. These guys are big supporters of our Epic brand and have been building some really tricked out rods.
Finally got the water conditions right yesterday and took my newly completed 686 out for a test drive on my local steelhead river here in the mountains along the California/Oregon border. As you already know it performed impeccably. Gave it a real test by using weighted flies, split shot and an indicator.
When he cast the rod the first time he just said, “Beautiful, this casts just beautifully” - "Amazed at the incredible artistry in wrapping this rod"
