  • Presenting the finest two handed Spey rod

Each Epic two handed Spey rod is a custom tuned, advanced, lightweight, and highly responsive two handed fly rod.

Titanium stripping guides, the best cork in the industry, Japanese silk wraps, CNC machined reel seat with self locating hood, alignment dots and a hand written inscription - this is a two handed fly rod like no other.

3 Weights. One length. 6 Pieces.

After talking to expert Spey casters around the world a 13ft two hander was clearly the most versatile and useful length for most two handed casters. A standardized length across our range also makes line selection a comparatively easy task.

    Weights:
Epic two handed blanks come in 3 different weights / power configurations:
    5 / 6 Trout Spey
    6 / 7 Large Trout & Steelhead
    7 / 8 Salmon & large Steelhead

    Recommended Grain Windows:
    5 / 6 Trout Spey: 340 - 420 grains.
    6 / 7 Large Trout & Steelhead: 420 - 480 grains.
    7 / 8 Salmon & large Steelhead: 470 - 530 grains.

    Convenience.

Feedback from traveling anglers told us that conventional 4 piece rods were too long to travel with, we took that on board and produce all our two handers in a convenient 6 piece configuration. These big rods will easily fit in your luggage along side a single handed fly rod.

Our unique ground ferule system means actions are precise and indistinguishable from a standard 4 piece rod.

Studio Built. Handcrafted, One at a Time.
Each Epic Custom is handcrafted specifically for you from start to finish here in our studio workshop - no detail is overlooked.

When purchasing one of our carbon fibre rods you can be confident that you are investing in premium engineering, componentry and craftsmanship.

    The Epic Action.
Epic C series would best be described as Medium Fast in action. Epic C Series are light without sacrificing strength.

    Tough
Our use of 100% non woven fibre and Silica nano matrix technology makes for a very tough, lightweight and extremely responsive blank.

We believe there is no better fly rod made.

      Superb workmanship

Quite simply this is (now) the highest quality rod I own, even pipping my self-built Sage X 6wt on which I lavished the utmost care in finishing. From the superb blank and cork through to the wraps the care taken in this build is obvious, the skill of the builder second to none. A fine example of the rod building art.

Extremely nice to look at and very light for type of rod. The finish on all areas is top notch. Best cork seen on any rod full stop. Thanks for a top class product

      I love casting this rod

Just a short note to let you know I have been using my DH13 7-8 Spey Rod now for over 12 months and I have certainly given it a workout (read Hiding). I have taught people that have never cast a Spey Rod, right up to Master Certified Casting Instructors preparing for their Two hand Certification. Several of those now own one and one has now purchased a 5-6 trout Spey as well !!!. I have fished Skagit lines with sink tips swinging flies for trout and on lakes casting Skandi and long belly lines. I regularly fish the rocks and beaches for a variety of salt water species so I have really tested it out. So what is my impression overall. Anyone that owns or has cast one of your rods knows the attention to detail and the quality of your rods they are beautiful. To me they have to be more than that, they are a tool of my trade so they have to perform. A rod has to cast smoothly and effortlessly all day, it has to handle a variety of lines leaders and flies. I have to be able to teach short casts to very long casts. It has to be tough and the 6 pieces makes it easy to travel with. Most importantly it has to be fun to fish. The Epic DH13 7-8 does all of the above with ease. From the first cast you FEEL the progressive action as the rod loads, but it is in the unload where the magic happens. The DH13 7-8 unloads quickly and recovers quickly but without the jarring feeling of some rods allowing you to make nice loops with very little tip bounce. I love casting this rod, I love fishing this rod and I love the smile on peoples faces when they cast it. Thanks Carl to you and the team for producing such an amazing rod. I highly recommend it… Brian Henderson. International Federation Of Fly Fisherman Master Casting Instructor / Certified Two Handed Casting Instructor PS. Had a play with a 5-6 trout Spey last weekend that is another rod I would highly recommend

Ultimate in large river trout Spey

This rod doesn’t disappoint in any way. From the moment you open the unique and highly functional tube to pulling out the sections from the excellent rod case you realise it exudes quality and class. The finish on the rod, whippings, fittings, ground ferules and best cork I have yet seen on a rod all keep with the theme of high quality. It is one of the best quality rods I have seen. Having put the six sections together you can feel they fit tightly and the ground ferrules grip and resist twist and torqueing – a handy feature for Spey rod! I was also pleased to see that Loop Classic 8/9 reel balanced the rod perfectly about an inch and half back from the top of the handle. So, no need to play around with weighting. Now for casting. I took the rod down to the lower Wairau River and fitted various long head Scandi lines (370 to 390gr and (38ft to 43ft) with different tips and medium head Spey at 54ft (470gr). I’d describe the rod as a medium fast action. This meant it was forgiving on timing and yet easily able to cast out tight wind-cheating loops. The rod felt light in the hand, not tiring at all thanks to the construction and balance point. Snake rolls, single Spey and water anchored casts all deftly delivered. Off the shoulder and left-hand casts were no issue. The action and 13ft length made this rod so much easier than my previous 6# at 11’6”. Also worth noting, I didn’t notice any twist in the ferules after several sessions and all day casting. Normally I tape my sections to stop twist and the risk of a section flying loose. I’ve yet to try Skagit heads, but these are a lot easier to cast so more a case of finding the best grain weight. I’m looking forward to winter! In summary I am really pleased with this this rod it is a very welcome addition to my rod quiver. It is perfect for trout Spey for are medium to large rivers where range and depth are important for presentation. Moreover, just about perfect for targeting lower river sea-run-browns AKA Sewin. And it made in the South Island New Zealand!
