This is my second Epic build. I love the no fuss no drama of receiving everything you need in the kit. Building the rod is pretty straight forward if you take your time. The finished product is great. Currently I'm fishing it with OPST laser line, 275g Commando Head and 96g bucket tip and bead head flies. Casts like a gem and plays the 3 - 4lb trout I have caught on it flawlessly. I'm looking forward to summer, a Scandi line and soft hackles. This rod is definitely a keeper.
The performance was flawless!
WOW!! Awesome kit! So I built this rod in one day its probably my 10th rod in as many years. I did the ghost wraps on the guides and black for accents and ferrules. I have to say the kit made it very simple and the results were great. I did build the rod using the Epic book, box, and instructions even though I have other equipment. I did have to ream the cork a little to get a proper fitment but I have reamers so no big deal maybe 10 minutes to make adjustments. The rod on the water is super light and powerful, I ran several combinations as was pleased with each. 1. Rio trout max 275, 24 lb Lazer line, 12’ OPST 96 grain riffle tip, 4’ 10lb leader 2. OPST 300grain, 24lb Lazer line, 12’ 96grain OPST riffle tip, 4’ 10lb test leader 3.Skagit scout 330, 24lb Lazer line, 12” 96 grain OPST bucket tip Combination 1: was absolutely a blast and probably the funnest for me a quick powerful tip cast. Combination 2: worked great as well and pulled a little more into the back bone but the distance increased. Combination 3: I thought would be an overload for the rod... ugh no!! A little more critical on technique but blasted line out against a pretty substantial wind and felt great doing it. All in all I will be building another DH11 kit for a friend and I am absolutely pleased with the purchase including the build. This rod is fun to fish, super lightweight, effortless to cast and just plain fun. The rod seems to be very sensitive I could feel every vibration/ pulse on the swing. When fishing i hooked some 16"-18” red band trout on the Deschutes River the tip had a very nice feel and the rod had a great bend to it. For a rod so light in the hand the power is incredible. I will be fishing it for 6-8 lb steelhead this fall!! I would say buy one and try it! I was nervous spending that kind of money on a new product with out any reviews but I am glad I did.
