This is one of the all-time great rods. Has the power to turn over a streamer yet is a good match to small stream fishing. As a builder of high-end rods - this is one of my most popular and has been used from trout to bonefish with excellent reviews. It is a joy to dress up one of these blanks matching exotic woods to the beautiful, rich colors these blanks are offered in.
The 690C is a beautiful rod in both finish and action. Just back from the first workout on Eucumbene and am thrilled.with the perfect action. The cast feels good and accuracy is ensured. No more deadly tip wobble at greater distance.
Light in the hand, but handles bigger fish with ease. Casting through the wind presented no problem.
In 35 years of fly fishing I have accumulated a number of fly rods ( all the "best" brands).
Can honestly say that this one has the best feel of all of them. It is a joy to use.
The Sage One has been replaced!
Well done Epic, I will be back!
The more glies I have the more I've come to appreciate a slim fly box where you can see all your flies in one quick glance so they're easy to organise depending on the fishing at hand. Nice that these ones don't cut into the more important rod fund as much as other boxes out there do.
The rod is simply great. I love it.
I do not have a big knowledge of rods but I like feeling of the rod casting and fighting with fishes. Cosmetic is fantastic. Also communications are so good.
I am highly recommend this rod!!
High quality and excellent assembly, next season will be black. This rod meets all my expectations. First time you fish with , it seems you rediscover flyfishing.
Wow what a smooth casting rod, I was abit apprehensive to start with buying a glass rod, as I have used carbon rods for years, but I seriously have to say, this rod is the smoothest casting rod I have ever cast with!! It can punch into a big wind too!, and handle a big fish Too!. I'm really impressed how it just rolls out the line with finesse, and dellitcally presents your fly. I have only just got this rod before Xmas, and have used it Twice, lets just say I'm mightily impressed!!! I must mention the finish, its second to none, your rod makers are true craftsmen!
For as long as i remember, i am, sorry i was an Orvis fan, so i wanted an Orvis glassrod. At least, that is what i thought. In the spring of 2014 i the USA and thought i could pick up one there. To cut i short, it did not work out. Back at home in Norway, i searched the web and found a company which offered a package deal, a "ready to wrap" they called it. I had no experience and gave it a go, why not, winters in Norway are long. I ordered a 580 "So Blue" and started wrapping. I was not satisfied with the reelseat and the corkhandle, thus using other components and finished the rod. Building the 580 was easier than i thougt. My first casts on my then home river, the "Renariver" where a real joy, i liked this rod from the start and we started a relationship, we bonded. My exes, then top of the line Orvis rods are sold and replaced by this 580, my rod of choice and a nude 686, nude 888, olive 476 and my soon to build mocha 376. The 580 is still my favorite and use it for most of my (river) fishing, but the others are valued members, they shine when needed. There will be a new 580 in my collection because i have the three piece and it is to long to have as e.g. airplane luggage. I hope there will be a 580 packlite, the 476 does not suit my need... but if not, i will probably go for the four piece... do i like swift fly rods? Yeah, they are Epic!
Perfection delivered in a box ready to wrap, and a real joy to do so. The kit is more than I expected and my finished rod is a real joy to behold. I'm thinking this may be the first of many.
Line casts well On my 6wt, including 70+ foot long dynamic roll casts which is why I wanted the double taper. Line does not have welded loops so it takes extra effort to rig it up.
Though I have yet to get out on any water to test my fly fishing abilities. I find the intro video very informative in my quest to learn, and I look forward to receiving the DVD.
Having had bad experiences with other commercial tapered leaders, I was somewhat cautious about trying them again. I need not have worried - this Stroft leader is strong, performs well and turns over nicely.
This rod packs a lot into a very small package. It has the smooth action you'd expect from an Epic rod and it has more grunt than you'd expect from such a little rod.
Initially I was a little skeptical of this rods ability to fight big, strong fish, but my skepticism was misplaced. During one of my first trips with this rod, I caught three fish over 24" - the best one is in the photo attached. I can honestly say I never felt under-gunned. I spent the day throwing large (#6) cicada flies in a decent breeze and, while this wasn't what I bought the rod for, it handled it well.
This little rod was perfect for the water I was fishing and breaks down so small it fits easily in a suitcase or bag. A great addition to the quiver!
This rod is by far my favorite 4wt I have ever casted. Paired with a Ross colorado LT, this is truly my dream setup. Building the kit was much less intimidating than I thought and the instructions were beyond clear. My first epic, but now I want a 686... Nobody else makes a backpacking rod that is this high quality!
The rod was a gift and was delivered quickly to the joy of the receiver. Was a little bummed they ran out 4wt line. As well the receiver of the gift had to pay to have it delivered or imported on top of what I paid which negated the discount in the end. Overall a great gift but just some shipping issues.
I'm heading to NZ shortly so I need a reliable strong leader that I can rely on. This is the one for the job. Paired with the Stroft Rig Rings, it will last for ages and I'll be confident when I hook those big NZ browns and rainbows.
I am new to rod building, and this was my first build. The Kit has everything needed to have made building easy enough to give me the confidence to try it.
Wow, I love how it turned out. Directions were easy to follow and my rod looks great.
My only advise is to follow the instructions to practice a few wraps before you start, it will definitely increase the confidence when you start wrapping the first eye.
This is a sweet looking rod, and I am proud to say that I built it.
Great action and feel of the rod. No other blank on the market matches it. Can't wait to make another one!
Quite interesting, not a lot that I did not all ready know, good for beginners.
I bought a new cutter and carry system so that I'd have spares for my old one. The design has been improved greatly and the old issue of jamming and falling off the spool holder has been fixed. The new spools feed line smoothly and the whole system is extremely efficient. Get one. You won't be disappointed.
I am the owner of #3 of 5 of these custom built rods by none other than the master himself, George Minculete. He is by far the master of his craft and definitely paid attention to detail when it came to building this rod. I am utterly impressed with the weight of this rod blank, for a fiberglass rod it's as light as a feather. Also, the wraps on this rod are perfectly applied, absolutely impeccable. And the reel seat, well it's polished to a mirror finish. I've never seen a reel seat that was so perfect. This rod was given to me by the best fly fishing partner I've had for the last 53 years, my brother Steve. It wasn't a birthday gift nor was it a wrapped gift under my Christmas tree. He bought it for the love he has for his older brother who has and will always be there for him unconditionally. I can honetly say that I had tears running down my cheeks when I opened the package, I just couldn't believe what I had in my hands, #3 of 5. I have yet to use it and I'm not sure if I ever will. This is such a beautiful rod that has tremendous meaning to me and even though this rod may be #3, my brother will always be #1.
Good fast postage
Responsive blank. Bought year ago. Only come one colour. Only one length. Is too expensive for a 3 weighted rod blank.
This is my 11th Epic fly rod which I build and the quality of the blank is always equally good.
Great movie, really enjoyed, Great photography & skillful movie making.Back country NZ showcased at its best AAA+ So good you could almost smell the bush & feel the water lapping your waders!!!
really impressed with this DVD. Wonderful & skillful photography, capturing the moments, you could almost smell the bush & feel the water lapping your waders. NZ back country showcased at its best!!!
Love everything about the kit, from the blank to the reel seat!
Excellent in every way! Thank you very much for an awesome product.
Super soft, comfy t-shirt!!! Great for hunting Bigfoot, big fish and good times! Stay FLY!
Great shirt and design
Earlier this year i bought a 476, and it suprised not only my self but my father i law was skeptic to the prosject from the begining.
Now I got another Epic. I bought my self a christmas presant, a Epic580 blue, that im gonna build in the christmas holidays.
In recent years i've been looking for a flyrod that give me a sense in that the rod is integral with the movements og my casting without being to fast and fast action rated. I can buy premium flyrod at double the cost of an Epic and throw out the whole flyline or being able to build my own with feeling, power and precision. I choose feeling, power and precision.
I have several flyrods but I only have two flyrods with soul, my precious 476 and 580.
My first rod build. It definitely wont be the last. This kit made my first build so easy. The instructions were very easy to follow. The windings were easier than I had imagined with a bit of practice as the silk thread is so fine. I found the basic rod holder was great and with the use of my fly tying bobbin holder it was no problem keeping enough tension on the thread. Reading comments from rod building sites regarding turning the rod as the epoxy was curing were over the top. I had adapted my BBQ rottisery motor to do the job but it was not required. Provided you don't need to go out for a couple of hours just turning the rod pieces by hand every 10 - 15 minutes (more often for the first 1/2 hr or so) worked just fine. So don't be put off by some of the hype around this part of the process.
Fitted with a reel I made a couple of years ago and loaded with a double taper line this rod will now be my go to dry fly rod. It roll casts beautifully. I also love the med/soft action and being fibreglass it is more forgiving when bow and arrow casting on our overgrown streams.
The build took approx. 6 hours not including drying time for the epoxies. The next rod build time should be a lot quicker.
Oh yes, the suggestion of sipping on a glass of whiskey while making this was a good one It worked a charm!
The communications from Swift were always prompt and the delivery to rural Western Australia very quick.
I finally got the rod built. I had some other projects and trips that slowed me down. I tried a 490 grain scandi It was like a dream as Juerg said. A 425 grain ultrashort skagit with a heavy sink tip worked great, also. The only downside is that it does not feel slow and noodly like one might expect from fiberglass; it feels like graphite.
The Glasslines are fantastic. they match Epic fiberglass rods perfectly and are true to weight. The double taper lines are very easy to roll cast and present the dry fly efficiently.
The line works very good with my Epic 476 and also with my Loop S1. The coating of the line is superb and shooting line is a pleasure. I had a successfully grayling fishing with it this autumn. Good work!
Fresh of the dryer, this rod got packed and carried up to an Alpine lake far from civilization. Right off the bat, I tied in a hopper dropper for those cutts, doing them the favor of having two juicy options. At first I had trouble tossing such a set up fishing a 4wt most of the year. After a short bit of practice, and coming to the realization that this is definitely a 3wt, I had it dialed in and casting gracefully. It's a 3 wt no matter how you look at it but it's a great 3 wt, possibly the last one you will ever own. At the time I bought it I received a sum of money for reporting a poacher and the price tag on it was 400 and change. Now it's almost 495. Since I first eyed it exactly one year ago the price has doubled. Understandably so because of our neighbors to the south, USA. I was hesitant to buy it, but now that all the rods seem to be out of reach this may also be my last epic ever, unfortunately. I got into rod building to save money and as a major creative outlet. Now I would have to be on glue to pay nearly 500$ for a blank. That's no components or anything, and hardy just released a glass rod fully built for $575 and they are one of the more prestigious companies out there to this day. So the choice is yours. Great rods, skyrocketing prices.
I bought a 580 to replace a rod for my wife and built this up custom and nice for her. We took it out several times and one day she let me borrow it for streamer fishing. Its alot faster action than I expected and comparing it to the other 5wt glass that I own but accurate as well. You could try one for yourself or for your significant other, but don't let them catch you leaving home with it!
Simply the lowest price on any practice line I could find. Even better that it's a DT line so I can practice with the same line I use on the streams.
I have had this rod for about a year now and have used it on streams ,rivers and lakes.Throws a lovely dry presentation and handles tungsten nymphs and streamers easily. The quality and finish is fantastic, communication from Trevor was great during and after the build.
Bought ready to wrap kit. Kit was great easy to understand instructions made the task easy. I had such a good time building this rod. The built rod i love it. Low overall weight makes it a delight to use on long days on water. I found this rod extremly accurate to cast. I love this ROD.
This flyline, like everything else from Epic, is exactly as promised and promoted. An excellent line as good as any other I have used.
Hi Y'all @ Swift, my abject apologies as I thought I had tx a responce covering all the learning tips and coverage as sent, however believe me the info as received is assisting me to relearn how to provide at least a reasonable cast sequence It may take me a 'while' to feel confident to cast a line - in the right direction, in a reasonable distance, and not in a extremely knotted format, however these do provide information in a easily understandable sequence and as far as possible in a user friendly format. So YES I am super confident I will relearn the sport and be able to chase the fresh water fish in a sportsman like means. SO thanks lots for the units involved, my learning program is slow but I am not cursing and swearing and breaking, knotting fly lines as per previous attempts
This is the first rod I have built - but it certainly wont be the last. I have been really impressed with the quality of this product - everything that is in the box (and the box itself) is top-shelf. The instruction manual tells you literally everything you need to know, and I was surprised at just how easy it was to end up with (at least in my eyes) a rod that looks as good as something you would buy compete. And in an ever increasing world of poor customer service it is good to see that there are some companies that still take pride in offering good service.
I really enjoyed the spey casting workshop. April has a huge knowledge base and she is a great instructor. She is very technical and astute, and she knows how to fine-tune your casting. She has has a great personality too, very down to earth and friendly. It was a privilege to meet her.
The kit is just awesome, can't wait to start wrapping it together and fishing it. This is going to be the first rod I build, but I'm sure that with this kit I'm able to get it done beautifully. Overall, great product and great customer service.
Being a Wanaka local and fly fishing guide, I couldn't wait to try a locally made fly rod, even though I didn't know what to expect. I then got my hands on the 590c to test out earlier in the year and quickly fell in love!
This rod is what dreams are made of. Silky smooth, freakishly light and incredibly accurate. From presenting delicate dry flies to throwing big streamers into aggressive browns, this rod does it all. The ability to load short casts in tight spaces is priceless, especially when you have no room to swing a cat.
All the technical features are ones thing, but you cant go past the fact that its just so damn sexy! Jet black blank and mine paired with a metallic red reel seat, I get goosebumps every time I unscrew the tube and gently slide it out from its silky sleeve. Who would have thought you could get this sensation from a "fly rod" which are now too often mass produced and soulless.
So yes, it is the best rod I've ever casted, and yes you should get one, even if its only just to give you the motivation to get it out and cast, regardless of the proximity of water. You will be better for it.
Matt Butler - Traveltruly.com
The hard way is to replace bad, deeply ingrained habits and casting faults with efficient new moves. April analysed my stroke and quickly identified several faults and gave clear advice on how to fix them. Better yet, she demonstrated how to fix them. April really knows her stuff. Clearest and most enjoyable casting instruction I've had.
I purchased the 5wt DT line for a Redington Classic Trout rod with moderate action. As an absolute beginner I was cautious of moving from a WF to DT line, especially with all the conflicting info out there on the net. Your article on DT vs WF lines was a no-BS article that made me try the DT for small streams where I roll cast as much or more than I overhead cast. My roll casting accuracy and distance has improved dramatically but surprisingly so has my overhead casting. I think it's because I have greater control of the line over short delicate casts (less than 30') in pocket water as opposed to using a WF line suited for 30' plus casts that I rarely need to do. The price was also spot on compared to the myriad of lines out there that would make anyone think they're being developed for NASAs next mission to find trout on Mars. Your Glassline DT was spot on. I'll be back for more.
April did a fantastic job of stepping us through the history of Spey, line set ups, difference between the various styles and basic casting steps. The 1-on-1 tuition was particularly helpful. Very worthwhile. Recommended. Looking forward to the next session already.
Onepoto may not have been the best venue given the ignorant, aggressive attitude of the gnarly old geezers who were racing their toy boats in the vicinity. Perhaps an estuary with a tidal channel may work or better still a river. Well done to Rod & Reel for organising the event with Swift. Top work.
A great casting clinic. Everyone gained a heap of info. Casting improvement in all that attended.
i find these to be extremely helpful, and am in the process of finding a more suitable park or similar to enable my practise with a old fly line, better in water I know but our small lake within the city has walkers, runners and pets doing loops for fitness. park area is open and mostly unused. main focus at this time is starting the cast, but the
video pix are great, easily understood and able to be utised
thanks heaps folks
have a great xmas
I was disappointed that the doesn't have welded loops. I should have asked prior to purchase. At the least I would like to see a reel end loop.
Just finished with my 580 ,and it was a pleasent ride. Nice instructions superb fitting and high quality components. Delivered in a cool box from some epic people...dont wait, just do it!
Great fly box ..nice and slim and can still take a good size Wooly Bugger without crushing them...Happy as with purchace...
I have found this tippet spooling system to be very good. It keeps Stroft tippet material tidy and allows it to be cut quickly from tippet spools. Thanks also to Swift Fly Fishing for your excellent service.
This cap is very good quality, looks and fits just great.
I am very pleased with this purchase and dealing with the guys at Swift Fly Fishing has always been a great experience. Thanks again for your great service.
I'm almost finishing my 476 Amber and I have to say this is a real pleasure to deal with this fascinating translucent blank. The quality of component of the Wrap kit are excellent: snake guides, cork grip, wrap silk, everything is perfect ! I customized the grip and and used one of my reel seat. I also try the famous Epic clear wrap with the dark inlay inside, it's promising but epoxy application will be the moment of truth ; let's cross fingers !
This is my 6th rot that I built and I never have had as much pleasure in the rod building experience, Thank you Swift Team !
Great product easy to use. I have use the Stroff tippet material for some time and the carry system and cutter rings just makes it complete.
Excellent service, and fast delivery
My new Epic Glassline weight forward line facilitates smooth casting with good distance even when pushing relatively heavy streamers. Importantly it also loads the rod for short accurate casts with good presentation of light flies. When used in combination with the Stroft GTM tapered leaders it provides a great combination of quality products.
I have fished for years with a few spools in different pockets among other clutter. One trip out with this system and I found myself wishing I had been able to get one a long time ago. Certainly one of the handiest gadgets now in my bag or vest.
Awesome line for delicate presentations! Good slick coating that shoots well! Really nice colour that shows up well on the water
I purchased Stroft tippet material in November 16, as I have done in the past. Brilliant service and communication from Swift. Excellent product also.
George Hadler .
What do you do when you pick up your brand spanking new 580 just in time for the opening of the back country season here in NZ?
You choose a river for your new rod!
Nick my fishing bud and I fished our Epic's side by side (a 480 and 580) on a small but very productive small river, and... sweet Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
Still a little early for delicate dry fly presentation we threw tungsten/double tungsten and a bulky strike indicator with out a care in the world. This taper has so much back bone it's not funny.
Trevor rolled an amazing rod and cannot fault his meticulous artistry. Thanks mate, your eye for detail is above and beyond.
I wanted a presentation rod and I got a freakin' Mona Lisa!
Satisfaction level is through the roof.
This was a 40th birthday present from my family to me and will be a gift that keeps giving.
You feel the strike, you set the hook and you get that sweet ass bend.
Better than a cake with candles ;)
Great kit. Everything fit together perfect. No customization needed. Can't wait to use it.
Made in America quality, the next best thing to Made in NZ. Comfy to wear but looks like it will last a good distance. Certainly happy with this one.
As an instructor I am always looking for instruction from others who will help me be the best instructor possible. The "Casts That Catch Fish" video is just the ticket! It addresses the common conditions every fly fisher encounters in moving water, wind, cover and how to cast with those conditions. Very easy to follow, great video work, and I love the accent too. ;) I also love the bi-color on the double taper line as it not only lets you know how long your casts are, its easy for the student to see, but the double taper gives you twice as much longevity. Oh, and it arrived here in Ohio, USA in lickity split time!
So much have been written about the 686 that it is difficult not to sound like a broken record. But what this rod has showed me over the past season is just remarkable.
It handels smooth presentations with a floating lines and dries, intermediate lines with shrimp patterns in the wind on the coast or sinking lines with dirty articulated streamers with ease. Such a smooth yet powerful taper and a beautiful build by the Swift crew.
And you can't get away from that you break off far less fish with the Epic FastGlass rods. I tend to fight fish hard, even on thin tippet and these blanks protect your leader from whatever the fish might throw your way even under serious tension.
This is by far the most versatile fly rod I have ever used and i'm quite sure using one, along with some practice, will make you a better caster.
Guide, Scandinavian Fly Fishing Guides
Capacity without the bulk, simple and effective. You can stand on these (even on the ends) and they wont break.
Absolutely no regrets purchasing these.
sorry have not had time to build it. the 686 is really beautiful to throw
From the moment of undressing from the stylish black rod tube it is clear that there have been many hours of thought, research and downright passion that have gone into the making of this state of the art modern fly rod - from the high grade Portuguese cork handle, black alloy bar stock reel seat, black nickel guides, Japanese silk wraps all on a black unidirectional carbon fly rod blank. It clearly appears thinner and much lighter than other rods. Put simply – “ it oozes “slick””
In the past 30 years we have all witnessed the quest for a faster and faster rod action. As a guide I have seen far too many “bust offs” on “sets” and “fights”. However, some manufacturers really didn’t get caught up in all of that “testosterone, macho, greatest distance caster hype” Epic is such a rod maker and the 590 C is the quintessential example of what a fly rod should do. Its medium fast action allows for extremely long casts while being equally at home with the finest and shortest of presentations. Its recovery speeds are surprisingly incredibly fast and yet the rod performs with a classic silky smoothness and finesse rarely experienced. I have to admit for me “it was love at first cast”. I didn’t want to put it down! At all distances its performance was exemplary.

This was a great opportunity to review the mechanics of fly casting and these videos really hit the mark. Fantastic videography and clear explanations. Good quality. Well done.
It's a gift. The recipient will LOVE it. Thank you. If you have some decals would love them. Please send some
My 5th Rod Dancer epoxy kit is as good as the first. Swift Fly Fishing don't take any shortcuts, ever, and their use of the Rod Dancer kit echoes that of other bespoke rod builders internationally.
Thanks Carl and Jeannie. Of course you've got great service and product! Epic!!
For strength and durability you won't find anything better than the stroft range of tippet.
after years of fly fishing, it was good to read a review of some essentials that tend to be overlooked as the years go by....thanks for bringing me back to looking at my casting and correcting it.
What can I say, the kit is great. Every thing is top quality from each component, the craftsmanship and even the instructions. I waited a long time to make this purchase and I could not be happier. The service I received both prior and after this purchase was also top rate. I love the concept of being able to buy a high quality kit and being able to build it yourself. Already have plans to purchase another kit for a winter build. Thank you to everyone on the Epic Team.
The 690 C is a superb fly rod and when matched with the correct Epic line is a dream to act.
I have been a "Sage" man for years but this rod casts better and feels lighter with an easy, less rigid action yet it still worked really well in the wind.
There are also the little options that seam small but are really very handy i.e. the dots to line up each of the sections and the fighting butt that is really good at keeping your reel out of the gravel.
I also have the 8 foot glass 590. I was a little worried about the length for our NZ rivers but it can get it out there plenty far enough. What really impresses is how softy it drops a dry of the water. Again with the Epic matched line is an excellent rod - the best I have ever owned and cast.
Now I just need to add more fish !
Many thanks to Carl and his team - your passion for your product is infectious !
I find Stroft simply the best quality leader and tippet material you can buy.
Great product. Compact, strong, fits nicely into shirt pocket
Let me just say that I was pleasantly surprised and blown away. I had talked about getting a high quality rod for a LONG time with my fishing buddy, preferably something custom. I knew others who made their own but it wasn't really something I considered given my lack of experience. So, my friend surprised me with this kit as a gift. Let me just say it was FAR easier than I imagined and I LOVE the rod.
The instructions were very simple and easy to follow, and this is coming from a guy who hates following instructions. Although I was a little intimidated at first, I was able to have it completely ready in a matter of days.
And it is a beauty! It's a fantastic rod and I am 100% satisfied with it. It's strong, and you can cast anything with it. My friend was glad to hear it too. He had read about the kit online and decided to get one for me as a test. Having heard my experience and seeing the final product, he's getting his own. I'm thinking of picking up some for friends.
I did take a peek and this is one gorgeous well put together kit. The colors are that fantastic hue only a fiberglass rod can give. This is going to be a great rod on the water.
Like the name of the fly line!
Epic mean everything.
Really enjoy that fly line. Its worth the price 100% sure!
I don't use an epic rod, but its work perfectly with my materials and I m really content to bought it.
Kit looks great ! Looking forward to building it .
A great friend of mine showed me the Swift 8 weight rod at iCast Trade Show in Florida July 2016...in a parking lot. Well, I was interested in the product line due to his recommendation, fit / finish and the dry cast feel of the rod. Ordered I did the 8 weight build kit.
Completed the rod weeks ago and have found it responsive to various WF saltwater 8 wt. fly lines.
The new stick has given me an appreciation for this glass fly rod. It is easy to cast weighted flies accurately and quickly to fish in the flooded grass flats, then spank them to hand for release.
I am planning another build. Thank you Swift.
From ordering to receiving things went very smooth. Can't wait to build it and see the look on my wife's face when she opens her sweet Salsa colored rod on Christmas. Looking forward to throwing a line on it a time or two as well.
Excellent and quick service and delivery.
The Packlight 476 is everything that someone would want in a backcountry four weight. Five piece, easy to carry, progressive taper but still has all the fun that fiberglass is supposed to have breed into it.
As with all Studio Built fly rods, the fit and finish are flawless.
The Packlight will be going on a lot of adventures and soon.
Second kit now - even easier second time round. Salsa colour is dope.
Very good survey of flyfishing casting techniques
Superb tracking and delivery service. High quality components and excellent build instructions.
Feels Great at backyard casting. Can't Wait to fish it. This will absolutely not be the last. Highly recommended!!
Superb tracking and delivery service. High quality components and excellent build instructions.
Wrapping this kit will be a Fall/Winter project that I am looking forward to.
In March I built an Epic 376, S2 fiberglass rod, just ready for the season. It is a fantastic rod and my other (graphite) rods have not been used very much. In fact I have sold some of them and now I have bought the 580, that I am sure will be as good as the 376.
Not only do Epic make great rods, but they also have a great customer service. Highly recommended!
Would be one of the Best Casting Tools I have come across for a complete and easy way to understand the way casting a fly line really works. Extremely helpful. Thanks !
Every thing is fine, you impress me with your customer follow up and your follow thru. rare ,not unheard of , but rare. look forward to future. Business. please keep in touch with future Business updates, thanks.....refer: once in a blue moon...
Works perfectly with the 686, so smooth!!
When guiding I carry a large range of flies and several boxs. These wee gems have cut down on the bulk I carry and are very tough to boot.
This shirt wears just like the "Epic" logo T I bought a few months back. Super comfy and the fit is perfect. No shrinkage after first wash. Becoming one of my favorite shirts to wear. The teachers and other parents love it when I pick my little girl up from school in this shirt! It's a great inspirational piece for sure! You should definitely pick on up!
Great T-shirt! Super comfy and the XL wears nicely on my broad shouldered frame without being to baggy throughout the torso. No worries about shrinking in the wash either. One of my favorite T's!
This was my second Epic build and, once again, it did not disappoint. Shipping was lightning fast and all of the components were, again, amazing. I purchased the newer Salsa color option and it's a stunner in the sunlight. The build went a little easier and was a little cleaner than my first build, a 686. Not that my 686 was difficult, but it was my first some there were some things to be learned and things to improve on. Their Ready to Wrap kits truly do make it possible for ANYONE to build a rod! I completed this rod in about 4 days. It's such a blast putting these kits together and I'll continue to recommend them to everyone. I just got back from Georgtown, SC where there's more bait than any redfish could ever consume, so your shots have to be on target into these tight tidal creeks. They're spooky too, so long shots are common place. The 888 was an absolute pleasure to cast. The 50-80ft casts that were required were fired with ease and on target. The results of this build kept a huge smile on my face all week. Now that I'm back in the land of trout and bass, I'm looking forward to chucking streamers and topwater bugs on this bad boy! Swift has done it yet again! I was confident in their products after the build of my 686, but after having my 888 in hand I'm completely sold! The quality and the performance just can't be beat! There's no doubt that I will be building several more of these ass kicking sticks in the VERY near future!!!
Gink and Gasoline
Packlight 476 Fly Rod Blank
Unexpectedly light. Looks a tad flimsy initially but is deceptively strong and well made. Solid componentry. Optical clarity of plastic is glass like. Great fly box for carrying in my pack onto the flats. Easy to open. Stays shut. Very happy.
Everything fits together perfectly. Just glue, assemble and wrap. YouTube very helpful where there is uncertainty.
Helped me very much with accuracy casting in areas with limited casting space.
I am halfway done with my build and I feel like I'm creating a work of art. This rod feels so alive in your hands. I can feel a bee fart two miles down river.
As with all of their offerings, the Swift Fly Fishing company delivers a superior product and does it with style and and eye for perfection.
Thank you so much for this. I could not be happier creating something this beautiful with my own two hands.
With no experience at all, this rod is coming together wonderfully. The instructions are simple and the results are staggeringly beautiful.
Very good easy to understand
Quality product, excellent results on the water.

Packlight 476 Fly Rod Blank
Bandit Ready to Wrap Kit
Stroft Cutter Rings
a perfect video to be inspired to plan my next trip to nzl
Just went out to test my Epic 476 Mocha after finishing the build.
And I have to say it's really a great rod and product. The rod delivers accurate and feels really crisp.
To be honest I just fell in love with how it cast's and feels
The building kitt speaks for it's self.
It has all the component's necassary and a detailed guide for building and an overall good quility of the components.
Love it but would also love to be able to download my copy so I don't have to stream it every time.
Bandit Ready to Wrap Fly Rod Kit
Trout Blaster T
I'm a hobby rod builder, just reaching the point where I have enough experience to feel confident building on blanks in this price range. Nothing in this book was new to me, but it's well organized, there are some good tips, and it was worth the price as an addition to my rod building resources.
I am pregnant and as you can imagine, not easy to deal with right now. Anyways my husband has been beyond amazing throughout and I wanted to do something nice for him. He is new to fly fishing and fascinated with rod building. He found the Swift fly fishing company and thought what a great concept. Of course when I went shopping for a rod building kit, I had no idea what I was looking for. Carl was amazing at asking all the right questions and walking me through the ordering process to find the perfect kit for my husband. He hasn't had anytime to put it together, but he loves the kit we chose. Looking forward to the finished product and very pleased with my purchase all around. Thank you Swift Fly Fishing company. You are doing it right.
I was looking to reduce the weight, bulk and amount of gear I carry on a typical day fishing. These boxes fit the bill nicely.
As it says in the title this was a first build. The kit was fantastic and the instructions well written and easy to follow. A friend helped with the build with some tricks he has used on builds of his. Great experience now can't wait to try this one out.
I purchased the Epic 686 kit a few months ago and had a blast on the build. This was my first attempt at building a rod and the instructions are very clear and made it very easy to follow. The quality of the kit is outstanding you can tell that each piece that goes with the rod is a high quality part. The only was to describe the way this rod casts is simply EPIC. I have taken it out a couple times now and landed my first fish yesterday on it. This is my first glass rod and lets say I'm hooked. I fired off a 20ft cast to an undercut bank with ease. Seconds later the line went tight and a smile was plastered on my face! All I can say is way to go Epic! You guys nailed it with this rod. I don't have a single complaint, thanks to you guys my goal of building my own fly rod was made simple.
Great videos, practical flies, informative background. Set your laptop by your vise and get tying.
Super happy with my choice on the 5 weight complete with fighting butt.
The rod looks great and the instructions are easy to follow. Now looking at a 8 weight build
I built the 686 4-pc for my son for a wedding gift and inscribed it to him on that date. It is truly a beautiful rod and the envy of the fish camp this year. It was my second Epic build and won't be my last. Watching my son break in the rod on a fabulous pair of Alberta West Slope Cutties, priceless. The 686 was not too much rod for the trout. It bends just fine and casts like a dream. Letting it go was the hard part.
Surprisingly quick with lots of reserve power. This rod is a new favourite!
Many thanks for this wonderful, entertaining, amusing and instructive hour of education.
This film really has improved my casting as it has improved my English!
This is my first Epic four piece, not my first 686 build, and it is just as amazing! Try one you will not regret it.
The 686 is really one of, if not the best 6wt rod I have ever cast and fished, not super fast but its got all the speed and power you could ever need!
What I really dislike is heavy bulky fly boxes. This box weighs next to nothing, has a slim profile and is is perfect size for the small number of streamer patterns that I carry. Prompt delivery and great service.
Fantastic service. Build quality of the rod is stunning. Performs exactly as expected. Everything about the package was world class, second to none. Definitely the best fibreglass fly rod that I've ever handled. Looking forward to bending it double.
Over time I have tried to find ways to simplify my fly tying with fewer fly types that contain few but durable Materiel. I now have no more excuses. The DVDs are very informative and helpful and will together with the book What trout wanna be useful in near future.
Great resource - need to practice this stuff
I live in the northeast part of the US and, when I'm not working, I'm chasing trout on small technical streams (e.g. Mossy Creek) in the east and bigger rivers out west like the Colorado, Blue, Arkansas or South Platte. This rod, the 690 C, is exceptional for any form of trout fishing. It's my favorite performance rod and is the benchmark against which any other rod should be evaluated. It's beautifully crafted and whether I'm fishing with friends or using a guide, everyone wants to give it a go and comes away impressed. I can't say enough good things about the production quality and the customer service I've received from Swift. Keep doing what your doing - everyone is taking notice.
Been meaning to fill in one of these report cards for quite some time. The problem is, which some of you reading and dabbling on which stick to throw in the cart on payday, is that I just don't have the time to sit down and write. Now you are probably wondering why, but I will try to explain here and maybe help you with some points that will help convince your wife why this rod is more important than groceries or the roof over your head. Since I last put that epoxy on the threads and slabbed up the first hog on this rod, I have not been able to put this rod down. Work has witnessed an increase in absent days, my family doesn't know who or where I am anymore. Words to describe this rod could be ones like, bomb ass, gnarly, accurate as shit(epic doesn't seem to mind some profanity, I heard), powerful and surprisingly classic feeling and crisp in its action. If you buy this 4 weight I doubt you will need to buy anymore rods, as this here is my daily driver now on all fish hogs or dinks. However, you will always desire more rods for more applications, but this one should be in your collection and potentially on your persons at all time.
This rod is super awesome! This rod can send the line to where you want the flies goes with relax, smooth, full of soul fly cast!! The best fiberglass rod i ever had!!!
Kit is as represented, well packaged for shipping, and quality components.
Beautiful rod and kit. The best instruction manual I have ever read about rod building.
A few things where unfortunately not ok:
1. customer service: I paid for the rod end June and the money withdrawn 1. July. I then thought the kit was send. But on the 7 July I get a notice that the rod will be send. Normally money are being withdrawn when the rod is send
2. Customer service: I ordered the rod the day before a special offer (free flyline) - I the send and email asking if it was possible to get the free flyline. I never received an answer despite the kit was send on the 7. July. It is perfectly ok if I missed the deal - I just wanted a reply back.
3. Cork handle was to wide for the reel seat. I had to get a new handle made for the rod. This is not what I would expect for a kit that cost the same as a topline blank from sage, loomis etc.
I got it on digital stream and the only question I asked my self was: Why hav'nt I bought this earlyer?
I've alot of flycasting.
The DT glassline fit perfect with my Epic476. Smooth casting with perfect roll-over. Looking forward to more adventure with my nr. 1 flyrod and flyline.
exceptional service, fast delivery.
Epic DT 4 wt on a 5wt Hardy "Angel" 2
rod. This would have to be easily the
best line I have ever used on this rod.
Very informative and instructing. I was impressed with the clear instruction given. It will help me with my Fly fishing
Often after internet purchases I feel like the product that arrived is not quite what was advertised. This is not the case with the ready to wrap kit. I bought the ready to wrap kit as a gift for my father and so while I haven't had a chance to build one ye,t I have had a chance to look over the kit with a fair amount of envy. It's all there ready to go and looks amazing. Apart from the kit itself what also stood out for me in particular, was the service fromSwift. Again from an internet buying perspective, I couldn't be happier. Prompt communication, posting and very friendly. No regrets and I will be buying from Swift again - this time for myself. Thanks
this was a bit of a disappointment I like to learn about the flies however he spoke very softly and philosophized a far bit and not much of action,I was going to buy the 2 of them but this was only available at the time,so i don`t feel like i will be looking for that one. the DVD of Once in a Blue Moon now thats a different kettle of Fish,I keep going back and watching again it is Great stuff.
Easy, clear instruction and high quality video.
Even if you're an avid fly angler with years under your belt, you will learn something here!
IMHO, the best intermediate fly casting DVD in the market. Period.
I found this video to be very helpful with the reality of practical casting. The video is beautifully produced and the photography is first rate. I've watched it time and again. The outtakes gave me hope that there is hope for the rest of us after some practice.
Ordered the book to learn more about assembling my future rod. (Hopefully a 580 fiberglass)
Book is detailed and simply enough that a novice such as myself can understand and feel at ease in the building steps.
Thanks Swift for allowing me to test drive the instructions before purchasing a kit.
I purchased a number of superslim flyboxes ranging from the medium streamer up to the large 168 nymph size. What I love about them is their slim design and seemingly indestructible plastic. Being clear is a bonus when you want to quickly search through your fly boxes for that magic fly. Good value too. I Highly recommend these fly boxes.
Hey guys, I just wanted to say thank you! I'm in love with my new 686!
For years I've enjoyed my super fast graphite rods, and didn't think it could get any better. I cast a friend's Epic 686 in the parking lot last summer, and could not stop thinking about that rod. Fast enough to obtain some pretty high line speeds, but slow enough to be able to feel everything. I was definitely impressed.
Fishing my 686 has really made trout fishing fun for me again! For me, fishing fast graphite rods now feels like I have a job to do, and fishing my glass rods feel like it's my day off and I get to have fun!
Thank you for keeping me interested in this awesome game!
Being less than dexterous, I was lucky enough to have Sandy Nelson build me a 376 and, as expected, it is beautiful.
Leaving the looks to one side, however, it is the most pleasurable rod I've used on our UK streams and small rivers. I sometimes even use it on the local stillwater - and it will cast anything from a size 10 goldhead damsel (the largest allowed) to a size 18 dry (the smallest I can actually thread) with comfort and accuracy over a fair range of distances.
Now saving up for an 888!
